IntroductionWhile working in this course, we encountered a problem or two.The first part of this page is reserved for a few word problems that I have come across on my travels. Read over them for the fun of it because after all, problem solving can be enjoyable. If at last you don't succeed at finding a solution then relax (the cosmic order hasn't been lost). If you have no time for games, then skip to the second part of this page where I'll show you how to set up name-based virtual hosting---in twenty steps no less! Enjoy. Problem SolvingAn Odd Paragraph About MarchMarch is an odd month. This month is full of charms such asSt.Patrick's Day, Oscar night, an odd day off school, mounds of snow that just won't vanish, harsh winds, Linux fun, and so on. You did not know, probably, that this too, is an unusual paragragh. How quickly can you find out just what it is that is so uncommon? Can you spot it? It looks so ordinary until you match it up against most paragraghs this long. (Actually, it is a fairly silly thing; still, put your mind to it if you will). Study this paragraph long and hard and I don't doubt that you will find its oddity (but nobody may assist you; do it without any hints from your pals). So, go to work! Par on it (solution) is about half an hour (I kid you not! In fact, I know this brain who took a solid hour figuring it out). Good luck and don't blow your cool. Just sit back, chill, look hard and thoroughly, and I trust that you will find out what is so odd about this paragragh. The Farmer's KidsA farmer had seven daughters and they each had a brother. How many children did he have? A Pair of SocksIt's pitch black in your bedroom and you go to your sock drawer for a pairof socks. Trouble is that you're one of these odd birds who wears only black or navy blue socks. In your sock drawer you have twelve navy blue socks and nine black socks. The question is: how many socks will you have to pull out of your sock drawer to ensure that you have a pair that matches? What Day is it?If it's not the day after Monday nor the day before Thursday, and it isn't Sundaytomorrow, and it wasn't Sunday yesterday, and the day after tomorrow isn't Saturday and the day before yesterday wasn't Wednesday, what day is it? Gone FishingIf two fathers and two sons went fishing and each caught a fish and brought it backwith him, then why were there only three fish? Troublesome Ten8, 5, 4, 9, 1, 7, 6, 3, 2, 0.How are these numbers arranged? |
